Our Events – Make life a celebration

Festivals bring celebrations into our life. We teach about sharing, caring and celebrating with others to the younger generation. Festivals bring the community together. Festivals are an expressive way to celebrate glorious heritage, culture and traditions.  They are meant to rejoice special moments and emotions in our lives with our loved ones.  They play an important role to add structure to our social lives, and connect us with our families and backgrounds. They give us a distraction from our day to day, exhausting routine of life, and give us some inspiration to remember the important things and moments in life.  Festivals were started to pass the legends, knowledge and traditions onto the next generation

When stepping into a sacred space, such as a festival or community garden, you pass through a certain threshold. You are able to step outside of your individuation and participate as one part of a greater whole; the community. The very nature of shared experience requires a certain level of communion. Though we like to assume that we are connecting with others from behind the cozy wall of a touch screen, this is often not the case. Due to the fast pace of our modern world, the opportunity to truly connect with others is fast becoming scarce. However, one of our most ancient methods for bringing people together is through rituals.

In the Indian culture, there was a time when there used to be a festival every day of the year – 365 festivals in a year – because a festival is a tool to bring life to a state of exuberance and enthusiasm. That was the significance and importance of festivals. The whole culture was in a state of celebration. Ploughing day, was a kind of celebration. Planting day, another kind of celebration. Weeding, that was a celebration. Harvesting, of course, is still a celebration. But in the last 400 or 500 years, due to poverty we have not been able to celebrate every day. People are satisfied if they just get some simple food to eat. So all the festivals fell away and only 30 or 40 festivals remain. We are not even able to celebrate those now because we have to go to the office or do something else daily. So people usually celebrate only around 8 or 10 festivals annually.” – Isha foundation

In India, during old days, a festival meant the whole town would gather at a place and there would be a big celebration. A festival meant we got up at four in the morning, and very actively, lots of things happened all over the house. In the UK, we almost forgot to celebrate any festival with the community. If it falls on a holiday, you wake up only at twelve noon. Then you eat a lot and go for a movie or watch television at home.

To bring back this culture in people, TARA celebrates few important festivals:

  • Pongal / Makarasankranti
  • Holi
  • Ugadi
  • Sree Rama Navami
  • Vinayaka Chavithi
  • Dussehra
  • Bathukamma
  • Deepavali

If we don’t create something like this, by the time the next generation comes, they will not know what a festival is. They will just eat, sleep and grow up without concern for another human being. All these aspects were brought into Indian culture just to keep a man active and enthusiastic in so many ways. The idea behind this was to make our whole life into a celebration.

Also Kudos to the performances on Skits, and special thanks to Surya Prakash for all the ideas and the great direction. I think we should be doing these more often.
